Heat pumps in Prophetstown fail differently than a furnace or straight AC — a stuck reversing valve, an incomplete defrost cycle, or auxiliary heat that won't kick in all need specific diagnostic steps. Our techs train specifically on these systems, not just general repair.
General HVAC techs are often less confident with heat pumps since the reversing valve, defrost board, and aux heat strips don't exist on a standard split system. We test each component specifically, since a heat pump issue in January often has nothing in common with the same symptom in July.
What sets a heat pump specialist apart.
We test solenoids and refrigerant flow directly.
Not replacing the whole control on a guess.
You can't tell which failed just by watching the thermostat.
We don't treat heat pump calls as a summer specialty and go quiet the rest of the year.
Different brands handle defrost logic differently, and our techs train on the specific systems common in Prophetstown, IL.
The failure points unique to this system type.
A stuck valve can lock the system in one mode regardless of thermostat setting.
Outdoor coil ice that won't clear on its own usually means a defrost board or sensor problem.
Verified directly.
Because heat pumps run two directions, charge accuracy matters even more.
The outdoor coil takes more weather exposure than an indoor coil ever sees.
We verify compatibility during service.
What to expect.

A tech shows up equipped for reversing valve and defrost testing specifically.

What Prophetstown heat pump owners ask most.
We don't assume, we test both possibilities.
If it never melts back on its own, that's the signal something's wrong.
Nine times out of ten it's a wiring or staging problem between the thermostat and the control board, and we check that connection directly.
A heat pump tune-up covers ground a standard AC visit never touches, namely the defrost cycle and the reversing valve.
Year-round, both heating and cooling mode failures covered.
We verify in both modes since the system runs two ways.
Yes, defrost logic and staging vary meaningfully between manufacturers.
Not inherently, though the auxiliary heat strips see more use in harsher climates and are worth checking during maintenance.
Regular tune-ups extend that window meaningfully.
