Heat pumps in Commack fail differently than a furnace or straight AC — a stuck reversing valve, an incomplete defrost cycle, or auxiliary heat that won't kick in all need specific diagnostic steps. Our techs train specifically on these systems, not just general repair.
General HVAC techs are often less confident with heat pumps since the reversing valve, defrost board, and aux heat strips don't exist on a standard split system. A winter symptom and a summer symptom get tested separately.
What sets a heat pump specialist apart.
Catching what often gets misdiagnosed as a compressor failure.
Whether defrost won't start or won't stop, we test the board and sensors.
You can't tell which failed just by watching the thermostat.
Winter and summer get equal attention here.
Different brands handle defrost logic differently, and our techs train on the specific systems common in Commack, NY.
The failure points unique to this system type.
A stuck valve can lock the system in one mode regardless of thermostat setting.
Outdoor coil ice that won't clear on its own usually means a defrost board or sensor problem.
We test the handoff between the heat pump and backup strips during genuinely cold conditions.
Because heat pumps run two directions, charge accuracy matters even more.
The outdoor coil takes more weather exposure than an indoor coil ever sees.
We verify compatibility during service.
What to expect.
Describe the issue and mode.
Not general tools alone.
We test both operating modes before quoting.
We verify the fix in both modes before considering the job done.

Common questions before a Heat Pump Repair visit.
We don't assume, we test both possibilities.
A thin layer of frost comes and goes normally; ice that just sits there and builds up means the defrost logic isn't doing its job.
The signal isn't reaching the strips the way it should.
A heat pump tune-up covers ground a standard AC visit never touches, namely the defrost cycle and the reversing valve.
Year-round, both heating and cooling mode failures covered.
We verify in both modes since the system runs two ways.
Yes, defrost logic and staging vary meaningfully between manufacturers.
Not inherently, though the auxiliary heat strips see more use in harsher climates and are worth checking during maintenance.
Regular tune-ups extend that window meaningfully.
